Empire Chess – Spring 2014 Issue
Thank you for the almost 800 players and caravan of parents and coaches
that made the 2014 State Scholastics in Saratoga Springs the best-attended
Upstate scholastic ever. We congratulate our champion, IM Alexsandr
Ostrovsiky, who will be representing the Empire State in the Denker
Tournament of High School Champions in Orlando, Florida this summer.

Empire Chess – Winter 2014 Issue
If you look closely at the Table of Contents, you’ll notice something about this issue of Empire Chess that has not been the case for many years. There isn’t an article by Bill Townsend. Bill has been quite busy with the running of his business and all that entails, so he has decided to take a break from Empire Chess. As much as we’ll miss him, we know that there are things even more important than our magazine, and we wish Bill every success in all of his endeavors.

Empire Chess – Fall 2013 Issue
In the last editorial, we bid adieu to Bill Hall, former USCF Executive Director. Mr. Hall has played in a couple tournaments since leaving his post in Crossville, but has not been active in the organizational side of the chess world. Our understanding is that he is looking for non-chess employment in Crossville, and we wish him well in that endeavor.

May was the end of the line for former U.S. Chess Federation
Executive Director Bill Hall. Hall sent a letter to the USCF Executive
Director saying he was leaving for personal reasons. Texas chess
organizer Francisco Guadelupe is the Interim Director, and a
nationwide search is taking place for a new Executive Director.

Empire Chess – Spring 2013 Issue
Both the New York State Scholastic Championships and the Greater New York Scholastics set records for attendance this year. For the Greater New York event, the 942 players was the highest total since 1999 at the world’s longest-running scholastic chess tournament. Empire Chess – Winter 2013 Issue
In 2013, New York State will be fortunate to host not one, but two, National Chess Tournaments. The US Junior Open and US Senior Open will be hosted concurrently this summer in Tarrytown. The Westchester County community is convenient to both Upstate players and Downstate ones, and offers a great time to visit the lower Hudson Valley during the summer. In an effort to make NYSCA membership more attractive and to obtain more members that actually purchase memberships regularly, the organization is switching from a membershiprequired model to one where discounts are offered at a variety of tournaments, including the New York State Championships but also including the Continental Chess Association and Chess Center of New York tournaments.
