In an effort to make NYSCA membership more attractive and to obtain more members that actually purchase memberships regularly, the organization is switching from a membershiprequired model to one where discounts are offered at a variety of tournaments, including the New York State Championships but also including the Continental Chess Association and Chess Center of New York tournaments. After a better than expected turnout, both of Grandmasters and of total players, at the New York State Open in Lake George, organizer Steve Immitt declared that the recently revived tournament is back on the calendar for good. Spring 2012 – Empire Chess
New York has a three-time scholastic champion for the first time in its history. Deepak Aaron made history in Saratoga early in March winning the State Scholastic for the third time. That is history New York Hall of Famers like Joel Benjamin couldn’t generate, and yes, the New York State Scholastic has been around long enough that Hall of Famers are among its champions. Over 500 players made it to the tournament, the most in recent years, and a sign that the recent slow economic times may be coming to an end.
